Musical Adventures Child Safety Statement


A commitment to child safety

We are a child safe and friendly organisation who values children and understands safety doesn’t just happen. That’s why we have developed our code of conduct – to balance the focus on child safety with continued positive interactions and environments that contribute to healthy development.

Safe, happy and empowered children

At Musical Adventures we strongly believe that all children have a right to be and feel safe, happy and

empowered. That’s why we are committed to child safety and have zero tolerance of child abuse. A commitment to protecting children is embedded in our culture and is understood and accepted by everyone. We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers.

Valuing diversity

We value diversity and invite children from all cultural and family backgrounds to our school. We welcome all children with a disability to our programmes. We are committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability. Our students are encouraged to express their views and are invited to make active choices about activities in classes and lessons. As a result, no child shall be forced to partake in an activity that they do not wish to partake in.

Always more than one adult present

In a situation where a child’s parent needs to leave the classroom Musical Adventures will ensure that more than one adult is present at all times with the rest of the class. If this is unable to happen the class will stop and students will go with parents until such time as the class can resume with more than one adult present.

Staff and volunteers

All Staff and Volunteers are required to sign a statement acknowledging the Musical Adventures Code of Conduct and commitment to Child Safety.

Recruiting and supporting staff

We are very selective when it comes to choosing the right staff to work in our music school. We have developed a careful and thorough selection and training process for all staff, whether they have direct contact with a child or not. The selection process includes interviews, supervised class observations, supervised class trials, and a thorough performance history (where appropriate) and a reference check. All staff are required to undertake a Working with Children Check or equivalent and are required to comply with the Musical Adventures Child Safety Code of Conduct. Our staff are supported throughout their careers by ongoing training, reviews and opportunities for self-development. Staff are always encouraged to maintain open lines of communication.

Reporting a child safety concern or complaint

Any parent, guardian, member of staff or other concerned person who has a child safety concern or complaint may report their concerns directly to the Directors via sophie@musicaladventures.com.au or  0425 814 123. Musical Adventures will thoroughly investigate the complaint and report back to the complainant on findings. If anyone believes a child is in immediate danger of harm you should call 000.

Risk Management Plan

Musical Adventures reviews and updates all procedures and policies at least once a year -normally during December and January. During the normal course of a working year risks or issues may be identified. These are treated according to internal risk policies and are dealt with in a manner to reduce the likelihood of an incident occurring. A risk register is maintained by Musical Adventures. Each venue and teacher is audited to ensure compliance and ongoing currency to perform their role. Any governance concerns should be directed to: sophie@musicaladventures.com.au.

Musical Adventures Code of Conduct

All staff and volunteers at Musical Adventures are required to observe child safe principles and expectations for appropriate behaviour towards and in the company of children, as noted below.

Each statement represents the key elements and strategies leaders and staff of Musical Adventures must understand and implement to help children and young people to feel safe and be safe.

All Musical Adventures’ staff are responsible for supporting the safety, participation, wellbeing and empowerment of children by:

  • upholding the Musical Adventures statement of commitment to child safety at all times
  • taking all reasonable steps to protect children from abuse
  • treating everyone with respect
  • listening and responding to the views and concerns of children, particularly if they are telling you that they or another child has been abused and/or are worried about their safety or the safety of another
  • promoting the cultural safety, participation and empowerment of Aboriginal children (for example, by never questioning an Aboriginal child’s self-identification)
  • promoting the cultural safety, participation and empowerment of children with culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds (for example, by having a zero tolerance of discrimination)
  • promoting the safety, participation and empowerment of children with a disability
  • reporting any allegations of child abuse to a Manager, and ensuring any allegation is reported to the police or child protection
  • reporting any child safety concerns to leadership
  • if an allegation of child abuse is made, ensuring as quickly as possible that the child(ren) are safe
  • encouraging children to ‘have a say’ and participate in all relevant organisational activities where possible, especially on issues that are important to them.

Staff and volunteers must not:

  • develop any ‘special’ relationships with children that could be seen as favouritism (for example, the offering of gifts or special treatment for specific children)
  • exhibit behaviours with children which may be construed as unnecessarily physical (for example inappropriate sitting on laps. Sitting on laps could be appropriate sometimes, for example while reading a storybook to a small child in an open plan area or as part of a music class)
  • put children at risk of abuse (for example, by locking doors)
  • do things of a personal nature that a child can do for themselves, such as toileting or changing clothes
  • engage in open discussions of a mature or adult nature in the presence of children (for example, personal social activities)
  • use inappropriate language or make inappropriate jokes in the presence of children
  • express personal views on cultures, race or sexuality in the presence of children
  • discriminate against any child for any reason, including culture, race, ethnicity or disability
  • have contact with a child outside of Musical Adventures without their families and/or our Managers’ knowledge and/or consent. Accidental contact, such as seeing people in the street, is appropriate. Social settings where the families are friends is also appropriate (for example, the child goes to school with the children of a staff member).
  • ignore or disregard any suspected or disclosed child abuse.


Online contact between staff and students:

Emails, texts or any online messages sent directly to children must have a parent or guardian cc’d in the message.

Online contact on social media (e.g. a Facebook group) must only occur if the parent or guardian is also a member of the group and can see all interactions.

By observing these Standards, you acknowledge your responsibility to immediately report any breach of this code to a Manager.
